Future HVAC Technician Scholarship — $500 Annual Award

A $500 award given annually to one Alabama trade-school or community-college student pursuing HVAC certification or EPA Section 608. Deadline: August 1.

About the Scholarship

The HVAC trade keeps Alabama running. Every furnace replaced before Christmas, every condenser re-charged in August, every air-handler cleaned out before allergy season — that work falls on technicians who chose a hands-on career instead of a desk. We started this scholarship because the supply of new HVAC technicians is shrinking faster than the demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects more than 37,000 HVAC openings every year through 2032, and Alabama is no exception. Trade schools in the state graduate good candidates, but tuition, tools, and the EPA Section 608 exam fee add up fast for a student already working part-time.

Birmingham Heating & Air Conditioning awards one $500 scholarship every year to a deserving Alabama student enrolled in an HVAC, refrigeration, or building-systems certification program — or actively studying for EPA Section 608. The award is paid directly to the student or to the institution, applied toward tuition, books, hand tools, gauges, recovery equipment, or exam fees. There is no application fee, and any student who meets the eligibility criteria can apply.

Who Is Eligible

To qualify for the Birmingham HVAC Future Technician Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following:

Prior HVAC field experience is not required. We weight applications equally regardless of whether the applicant has held an HVAC apprenticeship before.

How to Apply

The application is simple. Email scholarship@birminghamheatingandairconditioning.com with all of the following attached:

  1. Essay (500 words): Answer the prompt — "Why I chose HVAC, and the kind of technician I want to be." We are looking for honesty and craft, not polish. Tell us about the moment you decided this trade was for you, or the technician who made an impression on you, or the kind of customer service you wish more contractors offered. We read every essay.
  2. Proof of enrollment: A copy of your acceptance letter, current course schedule, or a letter from your school's registrar or HVAC program director confirming enrollment.
  3. Most recent transcript: Unofficial is fine. We only need to verify the 2.5 GPA minimum.
  4. Contact information: Full legal name, phone, email, mailing address, school name, and expected program completion date.
  5. (Optional) One letter of recommendation from an instructor, employer, mentor, or family member — under 500 words.

Files should be PDF, DOC, or DOCX. Total submission under 10MB. We confirm receipt within 5 business days.

Deadline & Award Timeline

If we receive a strong applicant pool, we may award one runner-up $100 award in addition to the $500 main award. Both awards are documented publicly on this page with the recipient's name, school, and program — with the student's written consent.

How Winners Are Selected

A two-person judging panel — one Alabama-licensed HVAC contractor and one editorial reviewer — scores each application against four criteria, each weighted 25%:

We do not weight by race, gender, religion, or national origin. We read every essay. Non-traditional students returning to school, veterans transitioning into the trades, and high-school seniors already accepted into an HVAC certificate program are all encouraged to apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to attend a school in Alabama?

Either an Alabama resident OR a student enrolled at an Alabama institution qualifies. If you grew up in Alabama and are now studying HVAC in Tennessee or Georgia, you qualify. If you moved to Alabama and are studying at Jefferson State or Wallace State, you qualify.

Can I apply more than once?

Yes. You may re-apply each year you remain enrolled in an eligible program. Past applicants are welcome to resubmit updated materials.

Can graduate students apply?

This scholarship is targeted at certificate-level and associate-degree-level students in HVAC, refrigeration, or building-systems programs, including EPA 608 self-study candidates. Four-year and graduate engineering students are welcome to apply but will be lower-priority unless they are actively pursuing field certification.

Is this scholarship renewable?

The award is annual. You may re-apply each year, but each application is judged on the current year's merits. A prior award does not guarantee a future award.

Does the recipient have to commit to working in Birmingham, or for your company?

No. There is no work-back requirement, no obligation to apply for a job with us, and no obligation to remain in Birmingham. We award the scholarship to support the next generation of technicians, wherever they end up.

How do I get my school to list the scholarship?

If you are a financial aid counselor, scholarship coordinator, or HVAC program director and would like to list this opportunity for your students, email scholarship@birminghamheatingandairconditioning.com. We will send a one-page printable flyer plus the canonical scholarship URL for your scholarship resources page.

When did this scholarship start?

The Birmingham HVAC Future Technician Scholarship was established in 2026 and is awarded annually each September.

About Birmingham Heating & Air Conditioning

Birmingham Heating & Air Conditioning is a working HVAC dispatch operation serving Shelby County and the Talladega corridor of central Alabama — Chelsea, Calera, Columbiana, Montevallo, and Sylacauga. Work is performed by John M. King, a licensed Alabama HVAC contractor (License #2020068), with 35 years of HVAC experience and EPA Section 608 Universal certification. We started this scholarship because we believe trade education deserves the same financial-aid attention as four-year degree programs, and because the Birmingham metro is going to need every qualified HVAC technician it can train over the next decade.
